Reddit Recovery Support Dashboard

Updates:

As of June 2023, development of the Reddit Recovery Support Dashboard prototype is on hold. While it remains a novel concept and potentially useful tool, additional work will need to go into Natural Language Processing classifiers to support user feedback features (this work is underway). Additionally, the suitability of Reddit's API for this project has become uncertain due to recent platform changes. As Reddit continues to establish new policies around API use and research affordances, we continue to remain hopeful for the possibility of future development on this platform. Inquiries about the dashboard should be directed to Dr. Colditz. Additional infoormation about the disruption of Reddit research infrastructure is available through the Coalition for Independent Technology Research open letter to Reddit's CEO.

In May 2023, Dr. Colditz assembled a team of researchers and technical consultants to further develop the dashboard. This video was presented to the Pitt Innovation Challenge (PInCh) competition. While not selected for funding, this process was helpful to think more clearly about the "big picture" of how and why this dashboard concept is poised to make a positive difference in the use of online support in addiction recovery.

In January 2023, Dr. Colditz pitched some new ideas to the Department of Information and Networked Systems capstone class, to connect with students interested in developing updated functions and features for the Reddit recovery support dashboard prototype. This video outlines the background, current progress, and vision for next steps on the "Reddit User Dashboard for Detailing and Extending Recovery Support" (RUDDERS) pilot initiative.

In 2022, a group of six enterprising capstone students in the University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information developed a prototype for a "Reddit Recovery Support Dashboard". This dashboard provides private, customized feedback about the addiction recovery support that you give and receive on the Reddit social media platform. The initial prototype was completed and presented to the capstone class in April 2022.

Congratulations and thanks to a great group of capstone students!
